Entrevista-TheCoathangers

Mala Vida Buena Música (MVBM): Hey ladies! Thanks for granting us this interview and, most of all, thank you for accepting our invitation to come down to Puerto Rico and play our show on July 19th. For those of our readers that still aren’t too familiar with your band, please bring them up to speed on: a) who are the band members?; b) how long have you guys been playing together?; c) what is your mission on this god-forsaken planet?

The Coathangers (TC):
A. Minnie, Rusty, Crook kid
B. 7 years
C. Party… Travel around this god forsaken planet… Make music for people to party to.

MVBM: Being in the Coathangers is the first band experience for all of you. However, have you guys branched out into side projects after the Coathangers began recording and touring, or do you devote all of your time and energy into that band?

TC: Most of it is devoted to the Coathangers but Julia has a side project – White Woods!

MVBM: Legend has it the idea for starting the band came to you during a car ride on the way home to Atlanta, after attending a political rally in Washington, D.C. At that time none of you knew how to play instruments and didn’t even own any. Is this true? If so, what was the rally for-against? What possessed you to embark on such an adventure?

TC: True! It was an anti-Bush rally. It just seemed like a good idea at the time… and an adventure.

MVBM: We’ve noticed there used to be four of you and now there’s only three. Why did your keyboard player Candice leave the band? Is there some sort of labor dispute between you guys?

TC: We like pineapples… Next question…

MVBM: How have you adjusted to no longer having a keyboard player in the band? Are you guys doing new arrangements on your songs or are is it just business as usual minus the keyboard parts?

TC: Nope – same old songs the same way!

MVBM: Your visit for El Independiente 4 will be your first time in Puerto Rico. None of us have ever seen you play live and we are pretty excited. Are you excited? What can we expect from your set that night? Will there be fire?

TC: We are super excited!!!!! You can expect to party!!! There might be fire…

MVBM: You guys are from Atlanta, which to our ears has had one of the most vital independent music scenes in the world during the past few years. Are there any newer, awesome bands besides the ones we already know (Deerhunter, Black Lips, the late, lamented Carbonas, Gentlemen Jesse, Barreracudas) that you would like to turn us on to?

TC: GHB, Acid Freaks, Dino’s Boys, Zoners.

MVBM: How hard has it been for an all-girl band to thrive in a male dominated scene like Atlanta? Do you think it would have been easier for you if you were from, say, New York?

TC: Well, we don’t know any other way but it could have been…

MVBM: A few years back the Coathangers were on that show “L.A. Ink” and Stephanie actually got tattooed on camera. How did you guys get on that show? Was Kat Von D. a total diva? I think she’s a big hottie but she seems kinda stuck up. Am I right?

TC: Suicide Squeeze help us get on the show! She’s a hottie and was super nice! To us, anyway!

MVBM: Are there any bands from Puerto Rico you guys like or know about? Which of them do you like the best? Most of em will probably be in the crowd when you play here…

TC:. We love Dávila 666… but we are pretty sure they broke up… right? Menudo!

MVBM: No comment. Do the Coathangers ever play covers live?

TC: We cover Gun Club’s “Sex Beat”!

MVBM: I really loved “Larceny and Old Lace”, I thought it was your best work at that point. Since then you’ve done a few singles, but haven’t put out a new full length. What’s next on schedule recording wise for you guys?

TC: We are going into the studio in September to record the new record.

MVBM: We thank you enormously for your time and, once more, for your impending visit to our island! Bring your bathing suits, please. Any final words for our readers before they get to see you play?

TC: Come prepared to party!!!!!! Thank you!!!! See you soon <3

The Coathangers en 5 vídeos

.

.
